FAQ

What happens in an individual session?

In an individual session we will initially discuss why you decided to pursue therapy, and any goals that you might have. Then we will use a range of art materials and/or drama prompts to explore that goal further. Being aware of our nervous system and how it can become activated, means that activities will be tailored to ensure that we are supporting your regulation and working within your window of tolerance to help you feel safe and able to learn and grow.

Are art or drama skills necessary for arts therapy?

Not at all. Sometimes it can even make it more challenging if you are experienced in the arts, as we have to go around that critical mind and get you playing and open to seeing what comes up.

How is drawing a picture going to help me?

Although it may look like drawing or playing at times, there can be a lot more going on. With the guidance of a qualified therapist, you are supported to witness your own creative expression in news ways and to ask questions that can guide you to deeper personal understanding

Does the therapist interpret the art?

Not at all. We can’t, because everyone is different, and the meaning you make with your artwork is personal to you. As therapists, our role is to help you unpack your own stories and prompt your own thinking, but the interpretation is completely up to you.

What age is it appropriate for?

Creative Arts therapy is for all ages. Creativity and a desire to grow spans across the lifetime. Many of us find it hard to speak about our feelings or sort out the jumble in our minds. Creative therapy can help by putting things outside of your mind and looking at them from a new perspective, so it suits anyone!
